HINDUISM -The Gist of Hinduism

Maaya is that which makes us think of impermanent things; positions, physical condition and relationships as everlasting. Put in other words they make us think of them as real. In the Geetha it is said,

That which was somebody else’s yesterday is yours today. That which is yours today will be somebody else’s tomorrow

This means what we have is not permanent; is not real as it seems. Hence they are called Maaya. Hinduism says that ‘what you have is what you need and what you need is all what you have. What ought to come to you will come and that ought to go will go. Therefore put full effort in your endeavours, without worrying about the outcome. Do not attach yourself too much to what you have. Attaching something to you only results in suffering. How and where things are and with who they are is Maaya and is the out come of Kanma. The great Jaffna Guru Yogaswamikal says: (oru Pollappumilai)‘There is no harm’ Geetha says:

What has happened is well What is happening is well What will happen is also well

What Yogaswamikal said falls in line with this. Maaya constitutes of ‘Thanu’ ‘Karana’ ‘Puvana’ and ‘Poga’. Thanu stands for wealth; our possessions. Karana stands for the senses and the mind. Puvana means the world around us. Poga means that which gives pleasure. All these are impermanent. The soul attaining MUTHTHI or becoming one with God takes place stepwise. First the realization that what we have is all Maaya must take place and attachments with them severed. Then by carrying out our duties as a commitment to God we must disentangle from Kanma. After this we must liberate ourselves from Aanava. This is the greatest hurdle in the path to divinity. God’s grace must prevail on us to overcome this. Lastly MUTHTHI or oneness with God will be attained. God is without Paasam. That is he is without Aanava, Kanma and Maaya. As such he is called Nirmalan (Nir means without… mala means bindings) Only when the soul attains this status it becomes eligible for MUTHTHI. When the soul is born and takes up a physical body it incurs Aanava, Kanma and Maaya. In this state people are called SAKALAR (we have mentioned sakalam elsewhere) or having all. People who have done away with Maaya are called PRALAIYAKALAR. People who have ridden Kanma are called VIGNAANAKALAR. The feat of doing away with Kanma is called IRUVINAIOPPU (treating good and bad equally) The achievement of disentangling from Aanava is called MALAPARIPAAGAM (doing away with what is to be discarded). When the last happens and after that there is SATHTHINIPAATHAM ( or God’s grace is conferred). Finally MUTHTHI is attained. MUTHTHI is also called ATHVAITHAA. (A- is like un- negation…. Thuvaitham mans being two ) Our (ordinary people’s) status is Thuvaitha. The status of those who have attained Muththi is Athvaithaa. The greatnesses of Hindu religion
