Ponnampalam.Santhirasekari –

Santhirasekari Aiya

Mr. P. Santhirasekari (பொ. சந்திரசேகரி, Ponnampalam Santhirasekari) led a life of ‘KARMAYOGA’. He became a teacher at Periyakulam and made his mark by his efficiency. He bought up 10 children empowered them and stood them worthy in the society. He was not just an executive of the teacher’s Union but a person who continuously laboured to raise it to higher level. He gave strength to the agricultural cooperative society of Nedunkulam. He was a political force who could compel the elected leaders. He was an ever available social counselor. In rendering help he was unselfish. The Tamil culture ‘VIRUNTHOMPAL’ embedded in the Holy Thirukkural was a norm at his home such that for all people known to him his house was a transit lounge. He lived for Tamil community in his own right. He was a friend philosopher and guide to me and many. Perhaps the most recognized senior citizen of my time, he was called and referred to as சந்திரசேகரி ஐயா or simply ஐயா by one and all. He life is an example for others to live their life usefully.

My salutation in his கல்வெட்டு

NIROSHAN SRIDEVA

Niroshan Srideva

Niroshan Srideva is a dignified person whom I came to know about. I consider him dignified because of his outlook in life and the way he lived.

Son of a long time friend Dr.Srideva Chanmugam he stands as an example of old time elites, who strove incessantly with their books to prominence in the society and a typical youngster affected by the civil prolonged militancy of his period.

He was a final year medical student at Sri Jeyawardenapura Medical faculty when he was killed and the assailants were never apprehended by the Police or the C.I.D. (Crime Investigation department).

As a student he was Par – excellent from kinder garden to the Advance Level and obtained admission to Medical faculty on his merits.

He exhibited pious qualities and was chosen by Temple priests in various places including Kathiragama, famous Murugan Temple South of Sri Lanka for special Tharshans.

In his period there was much following for Sathiya Sai Baba. There were Bajan centres spread throughout Sri Lanka and people regarded it holy to go on Pilgrimage to Putaparthi and have Tharshan of Sai baba. When he went there Niroshan was chosen by Bagavan Shri Sathiya Sai Baba for special nearness.

He remained a Sai devotee to the end composing prayers and hymns in praise of him. With Sai Baba’s inducement he was involved in selfless service to the society with love and affection.

His killers target had actually been his father Dr. Srideva who was wounded in the encounter but the son got killed when he intervened to protect the father. He had premonition of the event and seems to have commented about it which the father recognized only after his death.

His life is typical of a Tamil youth of the period and special enough to be unique.

Duraisingam Shadadcharan

shdadcharan

Mr. Duraisingam Shadadcharan is a person who was in a fatherly position to me. Tharmakaththaa of Sivachchandra Mouleesar Saanthanayaki Amman temple Madduvil kaluvam (madduvil Sivan Temple) and former Labour officer. A straight forward who upheld his traditions, customs and practices without fear or panic of the consequences.

His house is the Naarchar type found at the edge of Navali that sustain the culture as he himself.

My contribution to the souvenir distributed at his 30th day rites:
Never it occurred to me you’d be around no more
On any position or situation it was a great boon to me with you around

Over the horizon you stood a mountain of resource
Name any problem that concerns your family, land or livelihood resource
Ever dependable Shadadcharan Aiya was a counselor, Lawyer and Protector in one.

To him I may have been one in many
Over a third of my life he has been many in one to me.

Equally unmatched was his generousness as were his words and actions
Quick to the rescue for any s.o.s.
Unique were his relief measures
Anything only flows down from him to us
Lively were his ways we felt never the mere pawns we were with him

Old outmoded and even obsolete things
Remain afresh in his memory as recent ones

Entrances to quarrels he always avoided
Xiphoid were his counter actions that cropped up still
Control of any situation under him was par-excellence
Effective but affecting none were his decisions and actions
Limitless are the people who benefitted by just his association

Young in Nature even at his ripe old age
Old in wisdom right from his young vibrant age
Unsurpassed stands Mr. Shadadcharan in our times

kanagamma

My mother in law Mrs. Kanagamma Perampalam. passed away on 11.09.2010. She is a fine example of old time ladies of social status who upheld it without fear or fare come whatever the situation. Having had acres of inherited lands from Sarasalai, Kodikamam and up to kandavalai Paranthan in the Jaffna peninsula, she was humble and virtuous as anyone could be. Having got married to no less a landed proprietor Mr. Perampalam of indisputable status, she led pious life sustaining the traditions and culture typical of the Jaffna Tamil. Though she had people, generation wise loyal to her who have done cultivation in her lands, her life has been a lamp inside pot and devoted completely for her children.
